My Abba, My Dad

I received a call from our social worker today. It was the call that I have been anticipating for a few weeks now. Even though we're not "official" we're close. She spoke with the person at the state department, and our application has been reviewed, approved and processed. Next comes the final step of it being "keyed" into the system. We're not official until all is keyed in and we obtain a home reference number. Most likely, that should all be done by Friday (6/6).

As I was in my quiet time this morning, I felt God calling to me to just be still. I felt Him calling me to cuddle. I know that sounds weird and as I heard Him say that to me in my heart, I blurted out "Really?" I felt Him saying, "Come close, rest your head on my chest and let me hold you." I've never experienced anything like that before. Suddenly I was overwhelmed with emotion, not in a tearful sense, but in a childlike way. I felt Him close, I snuggled up with an oversized pillow and visualized myself cuddled into my Father. I've never had this type of intimacy with Him before so it was strange, yet marvelous. As I sat there, on the floor of my living room, hugging a pillow, I felt Him loving me as a father loves his daughter. One word flowed from my heart and burst forth from my lips ABBA.

I had read somewhere before that Abba is a name used to reference God in the most endearing way, almost like calling Him Daddy. Although there is no specific word in the English language to properly translate Abba, today I felt the emotion tied to that word.

Flash forward to this afternoon, I hang up the phone after speaking with the social worker. I feel overwhelming emotion. I feel myself anticipating, much like childbirth, a child that is coming to our home. I don't know when, I won't know how and I can't understand why, but a child is coming to us.

Today, my Abba allowed me an intimacy I've never felt. As I thought about that today, I realized that He is also holding that precious child, cuddling her. Keeping him or her safe until they can become a part of our family, even if it's temporary. I pray that as we journey down this path that will be rocky, tiresome, joyful and lovely, that my Abba will continue to hold me, secure against His chest, reassuring me "I'm here, I'm here..."

  1. You are about to experience something wonderful and extremely hard. Adopting a child is a difficult road, but I cannot imagine taking it knowing that you may be giving the child back. I know that God has a plan for you in this. I don't know how many children will bless your home before you meet the one planned to remain in your family. But, I do know it is not about the end result. It is about the journey. God bless you for taking the journey. I mean that. God bless you for taking the journey!

    Lots of prayers,
    Amanda

  2. One more thing..
I can understand this experience you had. It sounds as if God is showing you that He will be with you on the journey. I tend to forget that and get my mind on a destination. When I know a destination that God has chosen for me, I take the journey on myself. Then, when I'm incredibly tired and frustrated, I stop and hear God beckon me back to walk with Him. He'll get you there. Just walk with Him.

  3. Hi . . . There are so many children that need someone. My husband and I adopted our now five year old at birth. We thought we were "done" adding to our family - a 9 year old and newborn. We did renew our license with the state in October of 2003 and SURPRISE - March 15, 2005 two little boys came into our home at age 22 months and 10 months. During this the time we have had our foster license we have also done respit care once for five weeks and once for a weekend.
Foster care is very rewarding - for all involved, but at times it can be all consuming and irritating, frustrating, emotional. Three years after receiving the boys into our home we are waiting for the adoption hearings - after the two boys, a sibling was born (two years ago) and we are adopting him as well. The first two took a long time - termination of parental rights was processed and made legal last summer. The newborn (now 2) was given a gift - biological parents signed surrender documents three weeks ago. We look forward to completing this journey in a few months now and wait to see what God has in our future.
When people asked about our three youngest I tell them they simply dropped out of heaven - a gift from God above.
Remember - evaluate each case that is brought to you - there may be some children that you must say no to. Allow God to guide. We had to refuse two children due to their aggressive behaviors and the possible harm they could have caused to our other two children.
Listen to God - he is amazing!
    Praying for you!

  4. When you are so excited you can't stand yourself, let me know! I can relate!
When you are overwhelmed, let me know - I can relate!
When you are discouraged, let me know - I can relate!
You are going on an amazing journey
and people will always have "comments" take them with a grain of salt. I have had so many people ask me "are you crazy?" My answer is always yes, but when God is leading my steps, I don't have to be sane!

  5. That is soooo cool!
I got chills reading about your experience during your quiet time.
I LOVE those times when i can feel His presence and know that He is near me.
I will pray that when that certain child DOES come, you'll have the wisdom to deal with whatever background they are coming from.
    MUCH HUGS to you!
