If I had a dollar for every time we've heard, "Y'all are crazy," well....let's just say our ministry would be almost fully funded.
Yes, I agree, we are crazy. But you know what?
There are others like us.
Sure those other families may look different and maybe they don't dance quite as well as we Beavers do. But they are crazy too. And I take some comfort in their craziness. These families are sold out for Jesus, serving Him radically in missions. And I'd like to introduce you to some of them.
(Click on their names to go to their blogs)
This sweet family are the Helsbys. We "know" the Helsbys through an ongoing relationship via email. They are serving orphaned and vulnerable children of Tanzania and they have SIX kids as well. We "met" them through Chris and Lindy since they stayed at Livingstone Guesthouse when Becky neared her due date with their littlest one a few years ago. Becky has not been afraid to be real, practical and encouraging to me through many, many emails. She's set me straight on things I thought I knew and tenderly encouraged me in areas where she sees my heart aching.
We are crazy, so are the Helsbys.
Then there are the Swansons. We met this sweet family the 1st night of Candidate Week. The first thing Geoff asked me was, "So, do y'all know where you are going?" When I said, "Not a clue" we both breathed a sigh of relief that neither of us had any idea where the Lord was leading us.
The Swansons have 3 kids, one of whom, Sophia, has a manageable, yet serious, medical condition. They are leaving for Namibia (pronounced: Nuh-mi-bee-ya) in 2012.
We are crazy, so are the Swansons.
Then there's the Bentz Family. They are current Africa Inland Mission (AIM) missionaries heading to Lesotho (pronounced: Lee-sue-two) at the end of December. They have 4 children. I don't know them personally but from reading their blog it's obvious they have been on a faith journey since their initial pursuit of missions.
We are crazy, and from the looks of it, so is the Bentz family.
We also met the Tuckers at Candidate Week. Their sweet girls (along with Sophia from the Swanson family) loved on our kids so much during that week. They let our kids join the "big kid" table and Elizabeth really assumed the role of teenager much too easily.
The Tuckers are leaving to serve with AIM Air in December of 2011. Their servants hearts were so apparent to us while we were at Candidate Week.
We are crazy, so are the Tuckers.
Also there's the Lockwoods. Again, I don't know the Lockwoods personally. They have TWELVE children and serve the people of Mexico. Jaynee writes with such love for the Lord and such a heart of service. Talk about people who are CRAZY! Twelve kids AND missionaries.
We are crazy, so are the Lockwoods.
And then there are other families we know that aren't what normal people would call "missionaries" but are, in fact, on their own mission field.
There's this family who adopted from Rwanda when the world said, "Why? You already have enough kids?"
And this family who fostered then adopted a son. And if that wasn't enough they are now fostering a teenaged boy and LOVING IT.
And this family who is adopting from Ethiopia when they too "Already have enough kids."
And this family who is fostering two little ones while their own kids are still "young."
And finally, this family, who just adopted their 4th child (and it's their 2nd adoption) from China. Both adoptions were special needs children. Both frowned upon by the world around them.
And so many others that I can't even begin to list them all. Folks I know planting churches in cities that border our own. Folks loving on kids, teenagers, adults, people with special needs and orphans and following God's calling to pursue something crazy and beyond their own ability.
We are crazy, and so are most of our friends.
I hope that if you are reading this and not feeling a little crazy that you'll pray about the area of your life that God wants, desires and dreams to use in a crazy way. And join our family and our friends in being crazy in the eyes of the world.
Apparently, we Beavers aren't alone in the crazy. It's so good to know that CRAZY has company. And what awesome company it is, too.
It is so true we aren't to look like the world around us. We aren't to blend in. We are set apart and called to be the hands and feet of Christ in a world very different than the life we are to live. That comes with costs, though. Love you.
ReplyDeleteWe know the crazy look. Call us crazy too! We are right there with you!
ReplyDeleteI thought I was on facebook and found myself looking for the "like" button!!! But really, i needed the "LOVE" button. What better company than crazy? Love it. I find myself wishing I lived near you. I think we would be good friends! You always challenge and encourage me. I am eagerly following your journey and watching as the Lord does miracles in your family as you follow Him.
ReplyDeleteGlad to be crazy with you!
ReplyDeleteBut is it fair to ask people to send financial support for a family of 12 or 6 when another family with less mouths to feed could do the same job out on the field for less costs? And how much is the Mother of so many going to be able to focus on mission work -- mostly she'll be changing bottoms and wiping snotty noses like she would at home in North America. I am not saying - Don't go... I have been a short term missionary myself ... I guess I just wonder is the time NOW or 15 years down the road when the kids have grown??? People need to be accountable to those that support them in whatever endeavours they choose... Good luck! (Using my son's Google account) --- Denise
ReplyDeleteDenise,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments. When Luke and I set out upon this journey, we promised that we would consider every perspective pitched out to us. Well, I guess I should say, we'd consider every perspective respectively pitched out to us.
Thank you for putting your thoughts out there respectfully. I hope I can do the same.
Though I doubt that I can answer with completion the questions you raised, in the comments, I will touch on the points that Luke and I feel are strongest when addressing the issues you present. It isn't the 1st time we've heard those concerns. :)
Yes, it IS more costly to send all 8 of us to the field rather than sending a family with just 1 child or a couple with no children or just a single.
However, in truth, God has called our FAMILY to serve him. Not just Luke and I. So in part, our supporters would be sending out 8 missionaries rather than just 1 or 2.
As for my role as a Mom of many, this is an area I have prayed over relentlessly. I acknowledge that my role won't look much different in Africa than it would here. However, I have accepted my role in our ministry. I am excited to teach my children how to assimilate into a new culture, how to speak a 2nd (or 3rd) language and how to disciple the people the Lord puts in our life who may not ever hear the Gospel otherwise. The ladies that I plan on hiring as househelp will be my main focus of ministry, after my calling to my children. I'm exceedingly excited about discipling and mentoring those women in the Gospel.
As for waiting 15 years, here's what I'd pitch out to you. According to 2 different sources, there is an estimated 4.7 BILLION people who have never heard the Gospel. Another source cites 41.7% of the world's population is living without the name of Jesus being proclaimed to them.
We could wait 15 years, in disobedience, to our calling to go. Or, we could accept that it is at this time that God has called us to minister to the unreached people of the world. Yes it's more costly, yes it's more risky. But, truthfully, there are many believers waiting until the "right time" to take radical risks for Christ. Until we, as believers, stop waiting and GO, thousands of people are dying each day without ever hearing the name of the Savior.
Those are not statistics we can live with in our current, comfortable life. And, for whatever reason, God has purposed our family to go NOW.
Thanks again for your thoughts and comments. I welcome them always. Blessings to you.

ReplyDeleteNice to see your response this morning...
I don't know you or yours from anything but reading this blog --- I guess my perspective on it is simply that your family "ministry" is being a Mom to many - adopting children that needed a loving home etc. Who knows what you are doing in those little lives and how horrible their lives would be (or where they might end up) had you and Luke not been willing to open your hearts and home to them....
If it truly IS God's will for you to go to Africa, then I am sure your support will come in and you will end up on foreign soil. If it is not where God truly wants you (and is something of man) then I am sure there will be a detour in there somewhere and you won't make it through the deputation process and out to the field.... I recall a couple with 3 kids (I think) who were sure God wanted them to go to Spain with Avant but in the end they ended up back in Canada working in missions for a salvage ministry that sent Bibles and Christian books and other supplies overseas and the man supervised this warehouse. Was being in Spain better than working at home? Probably not... were they mislead when they were attempting to raise support to go to Spain? I don't know... following and finding God's will for people and their lives is so difficult... I don't know what it is myself at times.... Thinks can either be from God or a temptation for other souces... and it is hard to know exactly... I know I have been trying to ask myself what God has for me. And I think that I am supposed to strive to be a better wife (keep a more organized household) and Mother (started homeschooling etc.) and be a better Christlike example... we all must do what we are called to do. I do know that wherever God want you and yours, you will go and He will make it good. I know I am not called to be in missions in a far off land at this point, as my husband is not spiritually where I am but I do know God is moving in his life too and is slowly changing him! Blessings this Christmas season and always...

Oh yes ... we, too, are CRAZY!
ReplyDeleteWe don't think like the world thinks.
We don't look like the world looks.
We don't act like the world acts.
But, we continue to do whatever it is that Jesus calls us to do ... no matter how many people call us CRAZY!
We are crazy in love with Jesus, and we want only what He desires for our lives.
We are not ashamed that we are "different" ... Oh. So. Different ... than what the world says is "normal".
No. We are proudly NOT NORMAL.
